What to expect from your treatment
- Upgrade your diet: Choose more fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins. Reduce the amount of salt, added sugars and high-fat or processed foods you eat.
- Increase physical activity. Aim for regular movement such as walking, biking or light exercises. Even small increases can help improve your heart health over time.
- Manage stress. Use relaxation, sleep, mindfulness or activities you enjoy to help with daily stress. Ongoing stress can affect your heart and health.
- Quit smoking. If you use tobacco, quitting is one of the most important steps for better heart health. Your care team can provide resources and support.
- Control blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes. Work with your provider to monitor and manage these conditions. Medication may help. You may also see improvement when you eat better, exercise and quit smoking.
Common signs of a heart attack include chest pain or pressure, shortness of breath, pain in the arm, back, neck or jaw, nausea, lightheadedness or unusual fatigue. Symptoms can be different for each person and may come on suddenly or build over time.
If you think you may be having a heart attack, call 911 right away and go to the nearest emergency room. Do not wait to see if symptoms improve. Getting early heart attack care can reduce damage to your heart and improve your body's ability to recover.
A family history of heart disease can increase your risk of developing certain heart conditions, especially if close relatives were diagnosed at a younger age. This information helps us better understand your risk and protect your long-term heart health.
