Heroes of Healthcare: Stephanie Martin

Stephanie Martin is a nurse in the Clinical Resources Department at Vandalia Health Mon Preston Memorial Hospital.

A Clinical Assistant (CA) was assigned to work at the welcome/discharge desk but was struggling with confidence in her ability to perform the responsibilities of the position. Although she had previously received training, she felt overwhelmed by the tasks and was uncertain about her ability to successfully complete them.

Martin recognized that her coworker needed support and stepped in with patience, compassion and encouragement. Martin sat beside the CA and walked her through each responsibility providing hands-on guidance with printing, discharge packets, answering phones and completing the admission process.

Throughout the shift, Martin maintained a supportive learning environment where the CA could ask questions, practice the necessary skills and gain confidence. She treated her coworker with dignity and respect and focused on helping her develop the skills needed to perform the duties independently.

By the end of the shift, the CA had successfully worked through a challenging situation and felt more confident in her ability to perform the responsibilities of the desk.

Stephanie's actions demonstrated that exceptional nursing leadership extends beyond patient care.
