Heroes of Healthcare: Nutrition Services Department at Vandalia Health Mon Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital

The Nutrition Services Department at Vandalia Health Mon Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital exemplifies what it means to be a true Hero of Healthcare through their compassion, kindness and commitment to making every patient feel cared for—not only medically, but personally.

Recently, the nursing staff in the Outpatient Infusion Center notified Nutrition Services that a patient receiving treatment at the hospital was celebrating his birthday that same day. Rather than simply acknowledging the occasion, the Nutrition Services team went out of their way to make it special, preparing special cupcakes and delivering them to the Infusion Center before the patient left the hospital.

For a patient spending his birthday receiving medical treatment, this simple act of kindness made a meaningful difference.

On other occasions, the department has prepared warm meals for patients at the Infusion Center with little or nothing to eat before their treatment.

The Nutrition Services Department at Mon Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital consistently demonstrates that healthcare is about more than treating an illness—it is about caring for the whole person. Their willingness to go above and beyond creates moments of comfort, dignity and joy for its patients and their families.
