Heroes of Healthcare: Andy Deer
Andy Deer is the Director of the Clinical Resource Department at Vandalia Health Charleston Area Medical Center.
Deer’s extraordinary act of compassion exemplifies the mission and core values of Vandalia Health.
Recently, he volunteered at a local animal shelter during the United Way Day of Caring. During their time, volunteers encountered an older dog who was in heartbreaking condition. He was severely matted, covered in fleas and sores and desperately needed care and attention.
While all of the team members were there to serve, Deer saw an animal who needed more than we could provide during a single volunteer visit. He chose to foster the dog and took him home, where he spent significant time carefully grooming and caring for him.
The transformation was remarkable. More importantly, Andy provided something this dog desperately needed: compassion, comfort, dignity and the experience of being genuinely cared for.
