Academic Integration Agreement between Vandalia Health and the West Virgina School of Osteopathic Medicine
Lewisburg, WV (Nov. 5, 2026) --- This morning, Vandalia Health participated in an exciting announcement with Governor Patrick Morrisey outlining a Letter of Intent (LOI) to create an Academic Integration Agreement with the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine.
Vandalia Health CAMC has long been committed to being an academic medical center and training our future physicians, and this partnership will expand that goal and strengthen both organizations.
Vandalia Health is committed to meeting the needs of the communities we serve through the development of rural physician training pathways and rural residency training opportunities. Partnering with the largest medical school in WV to train the next generation of physicians will help us serve our communities.
This agreement would establish WVSOM as the primary academic affiliation for Vandalia through a phased approach beginning July 1, 2027, giving WVSOM students first priority for placement across Vandalia Health clinical sites.
This would provide WVSOM medical students consistent access to high volume clinical experiences in internal medicine, surgery, emergency medicine, cardiology, neurology, obstetrics, pediatrics and other clinical specialties. Students will also gain improved simulation-based education and clinical skills development.
This partnership will allow for expanded Graduate Medical Education (GME) and Residency Programs. Vandalia Health CAMC currently has 25 residencies and fellowships and continues to add training programs.
Vandalia Health CAMC has more than 400 active research projects and established research capabilities across a variety of specialties. An integrated model will create a larger research faculty and investigator network, more opportunities for WVSOM students to participate in clinical research and for the development of research programs focused on rural health care delivery.
The agreement would also enhance institutional visibility and national reputation for Vandalia Health as an academic medical system and provide increased recognition for osteopathic education, providing greater opportunities to attract nationally recognized physician leaders to Vandalia Health.
With the statewide presence of Vandalia Health, the partnership can develop collaborative relationships with rural hospitals, establish a statewide clinical research network and assist in addressing physician shortages and healthcare disparities in WV.
This is not an exclusive academic arrangement. Vandalia Health CAMC will also continue to train students from the WVU School of Medicine. There will be no change for the students currently assigned to the CAMC campus.
We are excited to move forward, continuing in our investment in medical education and training, in order to meet the future healthcare needs throughout the communities we serve.
This partnership also provides the tools we need to reopen Obstetric Services at Vandalia Health Greenbrier Valley Medical Center. This will strengthen our ability to recruit and retain essential faculty and staff to reopen this service.
We will also be able to utilize our training program in Charleston to help supplement necessary faculty for providing services.
In addition, we are planning to add a rural tract to our Obstetrics Training Program with the primary clinical site being in Greenbrier County.
We are excited to move forward, continuing in our investment in medical education and training, in order to meet the future healthcare needs throughout the communities we serve.
